Getting Back into the Swing of Things

Summer is coming to an end, and with it go the study free weeks that we’re all sure to miss come September. At this point, it’s easy to feel like you don’t want to pick up a textbook ever again. Though sadly the next academic year will be in full swing soon, so it’s time to brush off the cobwebs and get to work.

Remind yourself of your goals:

Coming back from a long break can be difficult. We tend to lose focus of what’s important and can often forget why we need to get the work done. Reminding yourself of why you’re wanting to study is a great way to stop procrastination taking the reigns. Ask yourself what your end goal is. Where would you like to see yourself in five years time? If this seems too far away, where do you want to be next year? What would you like to have achieved? These are great starting points, and will help you focus yourself ready for term to properly start.

Start small:

The likelihood of getting straight back into studying over night is slim, and even if you tried it you’d probably end up feeling overwhelmed. If you get back into studying by doing small bits of work at a time, you can build yourself up without burning out too quickly. Complete smaller tasks before you have to tackle the big stuff- this way you’ll be more refreshed and ready when it comes to writing that essay you don’t want to think about right now (sorry!).

Refresh your memory:

A few weeks before you need to start studying again, try revising what you went over last year to refresh your memory or find the reading list you need to tackle before term starts. By doing this you’ll be ahead of the game, and it’ll take a lot to make you fall behind.

Take a break:

It’s easy to get too invested in your work sometimes, especially when you’re getting back in to the swing of things! To avoid this, remember that it’s important to take breaks. Plan your study time around your social life (being careful you do leave enough time for the textbooks), so you can spend time with your friends and still manage to get the grades you deserve!
